Moms Rustic Furniture
There are several
different types of wood that are used to make rustic furniture.
Below we will discuss some of the most popular
choices when it comes to rustic furniture construction.
Steam-bent Hickory
When it comes to durability and flexibility on of the top choices is
hickory. Hickory poles can be bent and easily formed into unique furniture
creations after the application of steam. Jigs are created to give the
proper shapes to the steamed poles. After being steamed, the poles are
placed in the jigs and then left to dry. Once dry they will be very stiff
and hold the shape of the jig. In fact steam bent hickory is so strong it is
often used to make axes and hammers. One of the most popular lines of log
furniture is made using unpeeled hickory. Steam bent hickory is often used
for the construction of dining chairs, rockers, coffee tables, and dining
table legs by the Amish.
Northern White Cedar
This wood grows in Northern Michigan and Canada, and its unique
characteristics make it ideally suited to withstand harsh weather conditions
without either rotting or breaking down as many other woods might. While it
tends to turn a silvery-gray color as it ages, it can be treated with a high
quality finish to help it retain its beautiful light tan color. The drying
process for the wood will cause the wood to crack a little, which only adds
to the rustic character of the finished furniture. These cracks, both large
and small, serve to enhance the beauty of this natural product and do not in
any way indicate a lack of quality.
Red Cedar
While it is called cedar, the truth about this wood is that it is a member
of the juniper family and not actually a cedar at all. It also gets the name
Aromatic cedar due to its deep, rich smell that is very recognizable. This
wood naturally resists rot and damage from insects, and is very heavy. Many
people use cedar to line their hope chests to keep their items safe from
insects. This wood tends to be a brownish red color, although it can
sometimes appear purple. Even when a finish is added to the wood it will get
darker over time. Red cedar usually has small knots that add beauty and
character to the finished furniture piece. This wood gives you furniture
that will stand the test of time, and will be a great family treasure for
generations to come.
